On May 17, 2006 Southwest TV News travelled up Highway 32 in the hopes of talking to area residents about the failing condition of the highway. Initially, we were interested in talking to the postmaster in Lancer about the effects the road conditions had on the delivery of mail. However, we soon discovered this was a much bigger story as area residents quickly descended upon us. Normally most people find it difficult to talk on camera, however local residents had no trouble expressing their concerns about the highway.
Our crew interviewed 18 people and shot over 3 hours of videotape during our visit. We drove over 300kms travelling up as far as Leader and then back to Swift Current. After previewing all the video footage it was decided there was more than enough material to justify additional stories. So we created a 3 part series that showcased a number of issues associated with the crumbling highway. Even with producing 3 feature stories there was still alot of unused material. In the hopes of showing the overwhemling response we received while covering this story, we have created this web page which contains some of the unused material not seen in our stories.

AREA RESIDENTS:
We arrived in Lancer at 10am with our main goal of interviewing the
postmaster. Within 30-40 minutes we had over 50 people gathered in
front of the post office. Everyone with their own story to tell. After
leaving Lancer we moved up the road and met the Cabri and district
ambulance. They were kind enough to let us experience first hand what a
ride in the ambulance would be like for a patient. In Leader, another 35 people awaited our arrival to tell even more stories involving healthcare, lost business, near misses, damaged vehicles, the effects on local tourism, the list goes on and on. DRIVING THE 32: From the beginning we wanted to give viewers a sense of what it was like to drive on the highway. To acheive this we mounted our camera on a tripod inside our vehicle. The view is what you would see if you were driving the road. The worst section of the highway is about 20km from Lancer to Prelate. Much of this stretch was gravelled the day before, so the trip wasn't as bad as some locals claim it normally is. That was okay, it was bad enough!
