Ponteix - 100 years Notra Dame D'Auvergne
The bilingual southwest Saskatchewan town of Ponteix recently celebrated its 100th birthday. A myriad of events took place throughout the town during its four days of celebration. An evening mass on Sunday kicked off the centennial events. Monday followed with a colourful parade of over 20 floats marching down the streets. Visitors and residents continued the celebration with brunch at the Memorial Rink. Over 350 people tucked into a spread of sandwiches, salads and fresh fruit.
After lunch, it was up to a hilltop north of town for a commemorative mass at the original location of the town’s first church. Tours of the Notre Dame D`Auvergne were also available to visitors. The crown jewel of the tour was a peek at a 15th century statue of Mary and Jesus brought from France by the town’s founded Father Royer. The centennial drew people from far and wide. Bishop Hippolyte Simon of Ponteix, France made the journey to the southwest to see the town founded by his predecessors 100 years ago.
